Read some of the highlights from the reviews for Painted Lady, the 10th anniversary re-issue of Jon Boden’s debut solo album.
(Almost) entirely self-penned, ‘Painted Lady’ is a work of considerable ambition and originality that will surprise those expecting a version of Bellowhead’s full-on, euphoric energy. The album features 12 songs written by Boden and is especially notable for its dazzling array of instrumentation, including fiddle, octave fiddle, concertina, banjo, guitars, double bass, Indian harmonium, glockenspiel, electric piano, and perhaps more unusually for a folk artist, Moog synthesiser and drum machine – all of which are played by Jon Boden. The re-issue features three newly recorded bonus tracks including low-fi interpretation of a Whitney Houston classic, ‘I Wanna Dance (with Somebody)’.
“Boden’s schooling in musical theatre is evident throughout Painted Lady – both in the structures of the songs and in the dramatic, bordering-on-histrionic vocal style later honed to maximum effect in the all-conquering context of Bellowhead. The youthful love songs are sweetly delivered, whilst his cast of wanton, dissolute and tragic female characters are storied with compassion rather than cruelty” – Folk Radio
“This album may be ten years old but sounds as fresh and exciting as when it was first released” – Bright Young Folk
“A handy reminder of the debut solo album from Jon Boden… The re-issue has the added attraction of a couple of extra songs including seeing what he’s done with Whitney’s ‘I Want To Dance With Somebody’” – Louder Than War
“a welcome return for the album and a fine reminder of the man’s talents.” – Blabber ‘n’ Smoke
